 Good Day at the Office
Hi all. Yesterday, Eureka Dreams and myself went to an area where he had picked up a subgramma the day before. As the ground cover was a bit of a problem i elected to detect with my 14 x 9 elip. Within minutes i had found a couple of shotgun pellets. The next target turned out to be part of a belt buckle....has a snake in the shape of a S, with a head at each end... one for the collection. As you do, i wandered off and followed a drain back towards our vehicle. Next target turned out to be a small medallion (green in colour with maybe german markings on it) Was heading back to change to the 24" coil, when i picked up my 1st bit of colour (.5g) in the gully. Needless to say, i forgot that idea and proceeded to grid the surrounding area. Got my 2nd piece (.4g) about 6 metres from the 1st. Then got a target which turned out to be a small bit of lead. Out of that hole (which ended up about a metre long), the tally was 6 bits of lead, 1 ring which has a rubielike stone in it, 2 halves of a chinese measuring spoon (probably used to divie out the opium). That left two targets..one on each side of the hole which was beginning to look like an area where wild pigs had dug up! Dug one of the targets and low and behold out came a 4.9g nuggie . The other target was a bit of skinny lead. Picked up a .2g about 5 metres further up the gully. All up, 6.2g and some interesting pieces of history. Went back today and cleaned up a lot of the rubbish in the gully for no joy. Eureka Dreams picked up a couple of subgrammas, so for an area which has been flogged, a good result. We recon it was a good day at the office Cheers Vet69

Re: Good Day at the Office
A great day out with vet69,and as usual doing the hard yards digging up lots of trash to find the treasure but treasure you did find and well deserved too I was up on the lead working the mullock heaps around the holes when Lindsay declared over the two-way that he was taking a cuppa break after digging solidly for a hour.I had just got a soft signal with the 17"x11" NFA and won a 0.1g bit...Lindasy said he could hear the sweet signal drifting down the hill from quite some distance away...funny that you can hear such soft signals from afar...yet sometimes i cannot hear my missus from 2 foot away Probably thinking about gold. This area has been producing well for us,and other members here would know the area i refer to,but an area that is getting hammered can continue to surprise you if you approach it with fresh enthusiasm and use all your coils and best technique.Vet69 and i did some tests with our 4500`s on an undug gold target which is great for refining your skills plus getting to know what settings you prefer in a given target situation ie (target size and depth verses coil size, plus Search Mode and Audio settings) can give you an edge in certain situations..I know that most of us here have that experience and knowledge, but refining your settings to what works for you does result in more gold I am very happy with the way i`m driving my detector now...Yesterday Fire1 (Mick) joined us and we worked the area with Mick pinging two small bits.I spent most of the first part of the day digging heaps of undug trash targets (part of vet69`s trash n treasure patch) ...the thing is there were so many deep targets that were ignored by others because of the trash..Well after lunch i decided to have a break and free range with the 17"x11" NFA and i scored a 0.4g bit and close by a 0.3g bit There was a weather change coming and my coil became very unstable with near constant pings.Well after Lindsay,Mick and his wife Jenny had left i decided the EMI had beaten me and put on my 12" NFA and wandered up onto a burnt patch that had been flogged yet had given up in one area a patch of sub 0.1s to 0.4s...I know Fire1 had some success on this patch with his 8" Commander after others had supposedly cleaned up with 11" Commanders and 14"x 7" NFA coils...I had given it try previously also with my 12" NFA and had only got a 0.1g and 0.3g bit. Well there was more gold on that patch then and i and others had missed it until two chums wandered onto it between the junk and won over 23 small nuggets for near on 8 grams Anyway i cranked the gain right up to 13 and the stabilizer at 5 and i had the 4500 running smooth as well i heard this very faint signal and dug a sub 0.1g bit from the red clay,i had to break up a 20 cent sized clod to FIND the tiny bit. There were dig holes all around me and i got another one even smaller!! and it was so hard to find, but find it i did The 2 bits barely just weighed 0.1g...well i am very pleased that i could find these tiny bits on flogged ground with my 12" coil...It`s a good feeling when you are starting to really get the best out of your machine...You never stop learning and being surprised by the results....As another chum said to me that when you improve your skill levels, then all that ground that you have done before becomes new ground I ended up with 4 bits for 0.8g...hard won but happy with the results. Cheers Eureka dreams

Re: Good Day at the Office
Thanks guys. Was certainly an interesting day... the next day i think i picked up about 20 pieces of lead from about 3 targets!! Thinking of going into the lead sinker business Hey Narrawa.....now that is a bit of a challenge Intend to get over that way in the next couple of years once i have all the required equipment assembled. Got the van and some of the gear (generator turned up today). Think i,m a bit twisted as i love going onto supposed cleaned out patches with the mindset they didnt get them all Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt but a buzz when some yella turns up. Cheers Vet69

Re: Good Day at the Office
Vet69, mate there is nothing more challenging than pulling gold from areas said to have dried up. A few things we have noticed here in WA is the gold dug from hols left open...and tthere is a lot of them. Just the other day we went back to an area we first went to when we got here, and there was an enormous trench left open right where we wanted to detect, and a bout 30 holes left open near by....unbelievable some folks. Being on a Saturday the area had a few operators roaming round.....i could just imagine if one of them happened by and saw the trench and holes left open, and us parked there. what do you say to them????

Re: Good Day at the Office
Yep Narrawa, i'm with you..... pings me off seeing holes unfilled...it can only give fuel to the "powers that be" to stop us from entering state forests etc. Only thing worse are the people (i will call them that) who throw their rubbish back in the hole!!! As i have had some great success finding some multigram nuggets in other people's holes, i always check other filled or unfilled holes, so i tend to pick up other people's junk a hell of a lot. G'Day Reg. Am in Victoria for 3 months (or until the cold or wind chases us). Expect to be back in Clermont late in April..... and yes, definitely left you some nuggies there..... you just have to walk over them, thats all My patch gave me another nuggie today (.2g). Used my 14 x 9 epi again with the gain cranked up to 14..... little unstable (overcast weather), but wow, did it pack some punch!!! Picked up a button at 18 inches.. when it came out, i thought it would have been a bit of steel or multigram nugget owing to the detector screaming its head off. Did actually check the dirt again to see if i had a second target in the heap! Anyway, good day in the bush with mates. cheers Vet69

Re: Good Day at the Office
Hey Goldnomad. Think the "gold God" is teasing me here in the Triangle. Went over the patch described by Eureka Dreams...no yella but 4 targets...one 2g lead, 2 small bits of wire, and one shotgun pellet which was slap bang in the middle of the patch! Think the 14 x 9 is firing . On a .2g nuggie it out preformed Eureka's 12" round N/F ...we both swing 4500's and the settings set the same. Gave greater depth and sharper target signal. Its interesting to test your detector on mates targets to see if you get the same response...especially ground targets. Cheers vet 69

Re: Good Day at the Office
Hi Vet69
I can only vouch for the 12" round NF Advantage mono. Both my wife and I have found nuggets down to 0.03 of a gram with them. That's using a 4000 (my wife) a 4500 and a 5000. They were within an inch or two of the surface but that's sensitive enough for me. It sounds like all of Rohan's smaller coils are pretty deadly on small gold. We had great success years ago with his white Superlight 14 x 7.5 mono's also.
Cheers
Robert

Re: Good Day at the Office
Yes vet69 that was an interesting test between the 2 coils and both of us using 4500`s,and as it was an air test and the 14x9 Goldstalker read the target louder and higher above it.Now elliptical coils will most of the time give a brighter signal and be more sensitive than a round coil because of the windings. Also a round coil will seek out and respond to targets at a deeper depth than an elliptical in buried in the ground target situations I have found my 12 round NFA to be a great performer on deep targets, and is finding me the smallest bits also so i`m still happy with it`s performance....but vet69 you do have a great performer in your 14x9 Goldstalker PS..Yes Robert i have to agree that the 12 inch round is a good coil to have in one`s lineup Cheers Eureka Dreams
